Clemson has one National Championship. They won their National Championship in the 1981 season. Coached by Danny Ford, they went 12-0. The Tigers beat the Nebraska Cornhuskers 22–15 in the Orange Bowl to clinch the National Championship.
Clemson was a consensus National Champion in 1981; however, other polls outside of the AP and UPI gave five other teams the National Championship: Nebraska (9–3); Penn State (10–2); Pittsburgh (11–1); SMU (10–1); and Texas (10-1-1). *
Clemson, however, has four more undefeated seasons: 1900; 1906; 1948; and 1950. Clearly these are teams that should have played for a National Championship.
This year Clemson gets a chance to win the National Championship. However, the National Championship is still not being settled 100% by on-field competition. It's being settled, somewhat, by a committee. An expanded playoff would rectify that.
