Ole Miss last won the National Championship in 1962 when they went 10-0 under head coach Johnny Vaught. That year they beat the fourth ranked LSU Tigers by a score of 15-7 in Baton Rouge. They capped off their undefeated season by beating the sixth ranked Arkansas Razorbacks 17-13 in the Sugar Bowl.

That year USC went 11-0 and was chosen by most polls as the National Champions. The playoffs avoid this type of scenario where Championships are now settled on the field. The fans were ripped off.

Coach Johnny Vaught brought glory to Ole Miss that they hadn’t seen before or since. He was 190–61–12 overall over his career, 10-8 in Bowl Games, won six SEC titles, and won three National Championships. Vaught is in the College Football Hall of Fame.
