Running Back Ernie Davis from Syracuse was the first pick of the 1962 NFL Draft. He was drafted by the Washington Redskins. Quarterback Roman Gabriel from NC State was the first pick in the 1962 AFL Draft *. Roman was drafted by the Oakland Raiders.

Ernie Davis was a two time All-American and won the Heisman in 1961; his team won the National Championship in 1959. He was drafted by the Redskins, but was traded to the Browns. He never got to play in the NFL as he was diagnosed with leukemia, which took his life in May of 1963.

Ernie was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame post mortem.

Gabriel was a two-time All-American and a two-time ACC Player of the year. Despite being drafted first by the Raiders he chose instead to sign with the Los Angeles Rams who picked him 2nd in the NFL draft.

Roman had a 16 year NFL career with the Rams and the Eagles. He is a four-time Pro-Bowler. Roman is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

* Note: the NFL draft is in the spring after the college season; so, for instance, the 1990 draft corresponds to the 1989 season.
