Wide receiver Irving Fryar from Nebraska was the first pick of the 1984 NFL Draft. Irving was drafted by the New England Patriots.
Irving was a Consensus All-American in 1983. He played alongside Heisman Trophy winner Mike Rozier (running back) and Heisman finalist Turner Gill (quarterback).
Rozier had a decent NFL career, Gill never made it to the NFL, but Irving had a stellar NFL career. Irving is a five-time Pro-Bowler, caught 851 passes for 12,785 yards, and scored 84 touchdowns for the New England Patriots. Suffice it to say Irving was not a first pick bust.
