Nine schools would add Division One college football to their sports programs in the roaring 1920s.
Nineteen different teams would claim the National Championship over this decade: Princeton; Penn; Lafayette; Michigan; Pitt; Illinois; Cornell; Georgia Tech; Notre Dame; Texas A&M; California; Washington; Iowa; Drake; Alabama; Dartmouth; Stanford; Georgia; and USC.
The Pacific Coast Conference, now the Pac-12, emerged as a powerhouse, claiming national titles seven times in this decade: most notably, the California Golden Bears winning four national titles. At the same time the Ivy League teams were waning in their power and by the end of the decade they were no longer in the national championship discussion.
