Defensive End John Matuszak from University of Tampa was the first pick of the 1973 NFL Draft. John was drafted by the Houston Oilers.

John’s college career took him through three schools: Fort Dodge Junior College in Iowa; the University of Missouri; and the University of Tampa. He found a place at the University of Tampa and took the school to a level of success it wasn’t used to. John leading his team to a 10-2 record and a bowl victory over Kent State (21-18) his senior year.

John had a nine year NFL career and again it took him a while to find team that was a good fit for him. He ended up with the Oakland Raiders where he helped the team win Super Bowl XI and Super Bowl XV.
