Defensive tackle Russell Maryland from the University of Miami (Florida) was the first pick of the 1991 NFL Draft. Russell was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys.

Russell recorded 96 tackles and 10½ quarterback sacks his senior year at Miami. That same year he also won the Outland Trophy and was a consensus All-American.

Russell had a ten-year career in the NFL. He made the Pro Bowl once and won three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys. He also played for the Oakland Raiders and the Green Bay Packers. During his 10-year career he started 140 of 154 games, had 375 tackles, 24.5 sacks, and forced nine fumbles.

The 1991 draft was unique in that the first six picks were all defensive players. Russell had a very good NFL career, however the big snafu of this draft was Hall of Fame Quarterback Brett Favre being picked 33rd by the Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta however had the even bigger snafu as they traded Favre to the Green Bay Packers after his rookie year.

Russell Maryland is in the College Football Hall of Fame.
