Factoid 34 - College Football from 1910 to 1919 (Part 1)

Date: 8/1/12
UCLA Athletics Logo

This decade saw the most drastic changes to the rules of college football, which were implemented in 1912:

  • Teams were given four downs instead of three to gain ten yards.
  • The value of a touchdown increased from five points to six points.
  • The field was reduced from 110 yards to 100 yards, and end zones of 10 yards were added.
  • The kickoff was made from the 40 yard line instead of midfield.
Essentially, this decade saw the emergence of the modern era of football. While rules have been tweaked, there have been limited changes in them since 1912.

(Who can guess why the UCLA athletics logo is presented on this page for this decade? Hint: you will find out why in Part 2 of this post. )
