Success in college football did not come that quickly for Nick Saban. His 1995 to 1999 tenure at Michigan State was barely above 500 (.585). Astutely he left the Michigan State job and took the LSU job for the 2000 season; perhaps his tenure at MSU was tenuous.
At LSU his first truly outstanding season was in 2003 when LSU went 13-1 and won the National Championship. That was in his 15th season of coaching. Of course, now with his success at Alabama, he is heralded as a genius. His achievement came with time and hard work.
