There are actually several answers to the number of championships won in college football due to the way National Championships have been awarded over the years. Only with the advent of the BCS National Championship game did a “true” National Champion emerge. *
Alabama's National Championships
Alabama has won 20 National Championships over the years, which means a recognized poll or selector awarded them a National Championship. Five of these Championships were awarded retroactively. *
Alabama claims only 16 of these National Championships, while the Tide has won 11 Consensus National Championships.
It's a mess, really. The BCS Title game and now the College Football Playoffs are a step in the right direction; we contend the Championship should be decided on the field.
