Quarterback John Elway from Stanford was the first pick of the 1983 NFL Draft. Elway was drafted by the Baltimore Colts.

In his four seasons (1979–1982) at Stanford, Elway completed 774 passes for 9,349 yards and 77 touchdowns. In 1982 he was a consensus All-American and finished second in the Heisman voting. His record at Stanford was 20-23.

Baltimore drafted Elway in the 1983 NFL draft, but so did the New York Yankees as Elway was also a great baseball player at Stanford. Elway used the Yankees as leveraged and forced a Baltimore to trade him to the Denver Broncos.

Elway had a Hall of Fame career with Broncos and finished as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. He led his team to the Super Bowl five times, won the Super Bowl twice, is a Super Bowl MVP, and a nine-time Pro Bowler.

John is in the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
