The Clemson Tigers’ first season was in 1896. They won their first game vs. Furman by a score of 14-6 and would go on to have a 2-1 record for that year.
Their coach was Walter Riggs who also coached the team in 1899. Riggs went on to be the President of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association which was the forerunner to the Southeastern Conference.
Clemson’s success in football started when the legendary John Heisman was hired as Clemson’s football coach in 1900. He coached four seasons at Clemson, had a winning record each season, and twice won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
