Quarterback Randy Duncan from the University of Iowa was the number pick in the 1959 draft. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers.

In 1958 Randy was a Consensus All-American and placed second in Heisman voting*. Iowa led the nation in total offense in 1958. He led his team to an 8-1-1 record and a Rose Bowl victory over California (38-12). Iowa also won the National Championship that year.

Duncan went to play for the CFL’s BC Lions instead of Green Bay. The Lions were paying more. He played in the CLF for two years and then played for the American Football League’s Dallas Texans for a year, but did not see much playing time and retired from football that year. He went on to be a successful lawyer.

* Note: the NFL draft is in the spring after the college season; so, for instance, the 1990 draft corresponds to the 1989 season.
