The Minnesota Golden Gophers last won the National Championship in 1960 when they went 8-2 under head coach Murray Warmath. They were ranked Number One by the AP and UPI, but lost the Rose Bowl 17-7 to the Washington Huskies. They won the National Championship because the AP and UPI came out before the Bowl Games. The polls viewed the Bowl Games as an after the season event.

Minnesota has actual won seven National Championships: 1904 with coach Henry L. Williams; 1934, 1935, 1936, 1940, and 1941 with coach Bernie Bierman; and in 1960 with coach Murray Warmath. Given that Minnesota has not won a Big Ten title since 1967 this former glory is hard to imagine.
