Jones immediately went into coaching after playing and coached Syracuse for one year; the next year he coached for Yale and won a National Championship. He then coached for Ohio State (1910), Yale (1913), Iowa (1916-1923), and Duke (1924). His record for this time period and before USC was 73-28-8. Overall he had good success prior to USC with One National Championship with Yale and two Big Ten Championships with Iowa.

In 1925 Howard Jones accepted a job to coach the USC Trojans. He would coach there until 1940; his career being cut short by a fatal heart attack in July 1941. Coach Jones was chosen as an inaugural member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951, mostly for his accomplishments at USC:

  • Overall record of 121–36–13
  • Seven Pacific Coast Conference Championships
  • Four National Championships: 1928, 1931, 1932, and 1939
  • Five out of five Rose Bowl wins
  • Jones’ 1932 team outscored their opponents 201 to 13

Interestingly, while Coach Jones is in the College Football Hall of Fame, none of his players from USC are.
