Harry Stuhldreher was born on October 14, 1901 in Massillon, Ohio. He played high school football in Massillon and in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania. He was recruited by Knute Rockne and would play quarterback for him from 1922 to 1924.

Stuhldreher was a member of the famous Notre Dame backfield nicknamed the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. (To learn more follow this link ---> http://www.und.com/trads/horse.html.)

He was the quarterback for the team that went 10-0 and won the National Championship. Along the way they beat such teams as Army (13-7), Northwestern (13-6), and Stanford (27-10); for the season they outscored their opponents 285-54. Stuhldreher is a member of the College Hall of Fame and was voted in as a player.

After his playing days were over, Stuhldreher would coach Villanova from 1925 to 1935 and Wisconsin from 1936 to 1948. Some of Coach Stuhldreher’s stats as the Coach of the Wisconsin Badgers:

  • An overall record of 45–62–6
  • A National Championship in 1942 (Helms Athletic Foundation)
  • Three winning seasons out of 13 at Wisconsin
  • Finished second in the Big Ten twice
  • In 1936 and 1939 failed to win a game in the Big Ten
  • His teams only beat archrival Minnesota twice (1942 and 1945)

Coach Harry Stuhldreher was definitely a better player than a coach during his football career. Overall his tenure was alright compared to other Wisconsin coaches up until then but not worthy of the Hall of Fame. (Harry Stuhldreher is a member of the Hall of Fame as a player, not as a coach.)
