Steve Spurier vs. Urban Meyer

Steve Spurier announced his resignation from the South Carolina coaching job this week. His South Carolina Gamecocks were 2-4 this year and he felt he was no longer moving the program forward, in fact even backward, given his age. Probably a smart move. Why tarnish a career of success that spans five decades in College Football.

He finishes his college coaching career with 228 wins, 89 loses, and 2 ties. His winning percentage was 71.8%. He is ranked 13th in all time victories amongst FBS schools. He won 1 ACC title, 6 SEC titles, and one National Championship while at Florida.

Spurier coached Florida from 1990 to 2001, where he had 122 wins, 27 loses, and 1 tie. His winning percentage there was 81.7%. He won his only national title at Florida in 1996.

Spurier was a Heisman trophy winner (1966) and coached a Heisman trophy winner (Danny Wuerffel). Both honors were with the Gators.

Urban Meyer also coached the Florida Gators for six years (2005 to 2010). Under Meyer’s leadership the Gators were 65 and 15 with an 81.3% winning percentage. He also won two National Championships at Florida (2006 and 2008). Meyer played only one year as a defensive back in college.

Meyer’s overall record is 148 wins and 26 loses for a winning percentage of 85.1%. He has three SEC titles and one Big Ten Title. He is 9 and 2 in Bowl Games and 3-0 in National Championship Games.

So there you have it, two great coaches. Whom would you rather have coaching your team?
