Coach Bernie Moore was the first LSU Coach to win an SEC Championship in 1935 by going 5-0 in the conference and 9-2 overall. In addition to being a football coach, Coach Moore was also a basketball and track and field coach.

Coach Moore’s track teams won 12 SEC titles and a National Championship in 1933. LSU's Bernie Moore Track Stadium is named in his honor.

Coach Moore was born on April 30, 1895. Prior to LSU he coached football at Mercer (1926-1928) and was an LSU assistant head coach from 1929–1934. His overall head coaching record was 95–51–9. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1952 primarily for his coaching career at LSU and his work as SEC Commissioner (1948–1966). He was head football coach for the LSU Tigers from 1935 to 1947. (He resigned his coaching position to become SEC Commissioner.) Here are some highlights of Coach Moore’s time at LSU:

  • Two National Championships in 1935(Williamson System) and 1936 (Williamson System and Sagarin Ratings)
