Notre Dame’s National Championships Explained (Factoid 67)

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have won 22 national championships in Division One and Notre Dame claims 11 of these titles. Three of the 22 titles are retroactive selections. We have used every major selector that is officially listed in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision Records¹. Notre Dame has won five Consensus National Championships², which were awarded from 1950 onward.

Since there was no BCS championship game or playoffs during most of this time period, we are not going to judge which selectors are correct or not because no one knows; you would have to play the game. The 2012 Championship might raise some eyebrows, but the Cooley Matrix did award them the national championship.
