Quarterback Jim Plunkett from Stanford was the first pick of the 1971 NFL Draft. Jim was drafted by the New England Patriots.

In 1970 Jim was a Consensus All-American and won the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, and the Walter Camp Player of the Year. Top it all off he was the Number Draft Pick in the NFL Draft.

Jim’s career with the New England Patriots (1971-1975) and the San Francisco 49ers (1976-1977) was average. He however came back to championship form with the Oakland Raiders (1978-1986) where he won Super Bowl XV and Super Bowl XVIII. Jim played in the NFL for 15 seasons. He is in the College Football Hall of Fame.
