1901 Michigan Wolverines Football Team
Nine schools would add Division One college football to their sports programs in the 1900s.
The 1900s would see various schools claim national championships: Princeton (2); Yale (7); Harvard (2); Penn (3); Michigan (4); Minnesota (1); Chicago (1); and LSU (1). The forward pass was also made legal and implemented in 1906, which also saw the creation of the IAAUS, the forerunner to the NCAA. The first Rose Bowl and first bowl game ever was played in 1901 (a tradition which continues to this date).
The big story of the decade was the emergence of football in the Midwest via the Big Nine Conference (now the Big Ten) whose teams claimed six national championships in that decade and had by then started to challenge the Ivy League in football dominance. Most notable was the University of Michigan led by coach Fielding H. Yost, which won four national titles in this decade.
