Quarterback Tim Couch from the University of Kentucky was the first pick of the 1999 NFL Draft. Tim was drafted by the Cleveland Browns.

Tim was a consensus All-American in 1998 and the SEC Player of the Year. That same year he passed for 4,275 yards and 36 TDs. He was a heck of college football player.

Tim left for the NFL after his junior year and was successful as the first overall pick, but that is about it for his NFL career. Hard to say if being on a lousy team hurt him more than his own lack of ability and drive. We don’t really know.

Of the top eight players taken in the draft that year here are some real successes: Donovan McNabb, Edgerrin James, Ricky Williams, Torry Holt, Champ Bailey, and David Boston. Akili Smith being the other bust. Got us to thinking though is it that the players who bust are bad or that they are brought into bad organizations or both?
