The Stanford Cardinal last won the National Championship in 1940 when they went 10-0 under head coach Clark Shaughnessy. They defeated the seventh Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Rose Bowl by score of 21-13.

In 1940 they shared the Championship with Tennessee and Minnesota because then polls decided the victors and not all polls thought alike that year. Also, they were called the Stanford Indians back then.
