Factoid 43 - College Football from 1990 to 1999 (Part One)

Date: 12/31/99

The 1990s saw two schools add college football as a sport: the UAB Blazers and USF Bulls. The UAB Blazers are the football team for University of Alabama at Birmingham Division; their program was started in 1991 and they played in Division III; in 1999 they joined Division I and now play in Conference USA. The USF Bulls football team represents the University of South Florida. They were founded 1997 and joined Division I-AA but moved up to Division 1 in 2001. They play in the American Athletic Conference.

This decade would see 13 schools claim a national title through one poll or another: Michigan; Auburn; Georgia Tech; Notre Dame; Washington; Alabama; Miami; Colorado; Florida State; Nebraska; Penn State; Florida; and Tennessee.

The story of the decade would be the emergence of Florida-based schools as college football powerhouses with the Miami Hurricanes, Florida State Seminoles, and the Florida Gators combining to win eight national titles for that decade.
