Running back Billy Sims from University of Oklahoma was the first pick of the 1980 NFL Draft. John was drafted by the Detroit Lions.

Billy was a Consensus All-American in 1978 and 1979. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1978, his junior year, while rushing for 1,896 yards. His senior year was not quite as good when he rushed for 1,670 yards and he finished second in the Heisman voting to Charles White from USC.

Billy played for the Detroit Lions for five seasons, where he was three-time Pro-Bowler. Sims was on his way to a Hall of Fame NFL career, but a catastrophic knew injury half-way through the 1984 season ended his career.

Billy is in the College Football Hall of Fame.
