As the New Year rang in on January 1, 2000, so started a new century; the buildup was big, as there were worries of massive computer failures throughout the world and general nervousness about terrorist or disastrous events surroundings the new century celebrations. The computers didn’t crash and humanity safely celebrated.

Virginia Tech played Florida State in the BCS National Championship Game in the Louisiana Super Dome on January 4, with Florida State winning 46 to 29. Marshall was left out of this contest even though they, too, were undefeated going into the Bowl Season. Florida State was crowned the undisputed national championship winner by all the polls.

It had been quite a century of college football, starting with small stadiums and limited radio coverage; by 1999 almost all college games would be televised, with stadiums of 100,000 plus capacity not uncommon. The new century has only really begun, but most assuredly college football on January 1, 2100 will be much different then we know it today.
