The other big story of the decade would be the creation of the Bowl Championship Series National Championship Game. This was the first attempt by the NCAA to settle who won the national championship based on an actual game and not a poll. The two teams selected to go, however, were based on a complicated polling system called the BSC Poll. The first BCS National Championship game was played between the Tennessee Volunteers and the Florida State Seminoles, which the Volunteers won by a score of 23 to 16.

The first national title game was not without controversy, however, as both The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Kansas State Wildcats had one loss prior to the start of the bowl season - the same number of losses that the Florida State Seminoles had.
