The 2000s saw three schools add college football as a sport: the Georgia State Panthers; the UTSA Roadrunners; and the Charlotte 49ers. All three schools started out in a lower division with the Georgia State Panthers and the UTSA Roadrunners having already moved up to the FBS division, and the Charlotte 49ers are scheduled to do so in 2015. The Georgia State Panthers are in the Sun Belt Conference, the UTSA Roadrunners are in Conference USA, and the Charlotte 49ers will be in Conference USA.
The following schools won a BSC National Title in this decade (so far): Alabama (2); Auburn (1); and Florida State. (LSU, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma State were also each voted champions outside of the BCS poll for this decade.)
The SEC dominated the first three years of this decade with Auburn and Alabama (2) winning the national championship for these years. However, Florida State was able to beat Auburn by a score of 34 to 31. Perhaps the SEC’s power is waning. It is too early to tell, but with teams learning how to circumvent SEC size with the spread offense and hurry up offense, perhaps the tide is turning. Another factor that could challenge the SEC schools is that other conferences are also starting to pay their assistant coaches six figure salaries, such as Urban Meyer’s staff at The Ohio State University. Time will tell.
