Quarterback King Hill from the Rice University was the number pick in the 1958 draft. He was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals.
In 1957 King was an AP All-American*. In 1957 he led his Rice Owls to the Southwest Conference title and to the Cotton Bowl (they lost to Navy 20-7). He was one of the last players to letter in three sports in college: football; basketball; and golf.
He played in the NFL for 12 years. After his playing days he coached and was also a scout in the NFL. Overall he worked in the NFL for over 35 years as a player, coach, and scout.
* Note: the NFL draft is in the spring after the college season; so, for instance, the 1990 draft corresponds to the 1989 season.
