Quarterback Troy Aikman from UCLA was the first pick of the 1989 NFL Draft. Troy was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys.
Aikman was initially recruited by and went to play for Barry Switzer at Oklahoma. However, an injury his Sophomore year ended his season and his career at Oklahoma. Coach Switzer switched back to the wishbone and the team did well under Switzer’s bread and butter. As a result of this Troy transferred to UCLA to play for Terry Donahue and the more pass orientated UCLA Bruins.
Troy did great at UCLA passing for 2,527 yards his junior year and 2,771 yards his senior year. His senior year he won the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's top quarterback and was a consensus All-American.
The Cowboys new owner, Jerry Jones, drafted Aikman in the 1989 draft. At the about the same time Jones also fired legendary coach Tom Landry and replaced him with Jimmy Johnson. The rest is history. Troy would go on to win three Super Bowls (XXVII, XXVIII, XXX), pass for over 32,942 yards, play in the league for 12 seasons, and be selected to the Pro Bowl six times.
Troy is in the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
