Offensive Tackle Orlando Pace from The Ohio State University was the first pick of the 1997 NFL Draft. Orlando was drafted by the St. Louis Rams.
Orlando started as a true freshman for Ohio State. He would go on to have a stellar career for the Buckeyes. He was the original “Pancake Man” as his pancake blocks were legendary. (A pancake block is when an offensive lineman knocks a defender on his back.) His junior and senior year he did not give up a sack.
He was a two-time consensus All-American, he won the Lombardi Award twice, his senior year he won the Outland Trophy, and finished fourth in the Heisman trophy voting.
Orlando was selected by the St. Louis Rams as the first overall pick in the 1997 NFL Draft. Orlando had a 13 year NFL career. He and his team won
Super Bowl XXXIV and lost in Super Bowl XXXVI. He was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection from 1999 to 2005. He played all but one season with the Rams; his last season being with the Chicago Bears. Over his career he made over $75 million in salary and bonuses.
Orlando is in the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
