Running back Billy Cannon from LSU was the number pick in the 1960 draft. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams.
Billy was a Consensus All-American in 1958 and LSU won the National Championship that year. In 1959 Billy was again a Consensus All-American and won the Heisman*.
Billy did not play for the Rams but signed with the AFL’s Houston Oilers instead. He went on to have an eleven-year career in the AFL. He played for the Oilers, the Raiders, and the Chiefs.
* Note: the NFL draft is in the spring after the college season; so, for instance, the 1990 draft corresponds to the 1989 season.
